About this pattern
i recently had a fancier event to attend and realized i didn’t have a light layer to wear that would still show off my dress. so i set myself a mission and knit this poncho up in a matter of days.
it’s the perfect multipurpose layering piece. light enough for a summer wedding, elegant enough for a candlelit dinner, and versatile for more casual wear. wear it as a poncho, drape it as a shawl or scarf…
fully customizable, meaning you can knit it longer or shorter to suit your taste — all in under two skeins of mohair.
bonus: it’s warmer than you’d think.
difficulty 1/5: suitable for beginners, though knitting with mohair can take some getting used to.
sizing one size with customizable fit. this poncho is truly nothing more than a long rectangle sewn together, making it easy to adjust — keep trying it on as you go and cast off when it feels right. to make the rectangle wider, cast on an extra ~10 stitches.
yarn 50 g of any lace weight mohair, held as a single strand.
some favorites include: isager silk mohair (25g = 212m) filcolana tilia (25g = 210m) knitting for olive soft silk mohair (25g = 246m)
needles 8 mm needles (circular or straight)
gauge 14 stitches x 13 rows = 10 cm x 10 cm mohair knit at this loose gauge is very flexible and can stretch significantly row-wise or stitch-wise. don’t worry about exact measurements — hitting gauge is not important for this pattern.
